Devine Group is turning 50! Founded on 6th July 1974, they're celebrating half a century of success. Despite tough times like economic crashes and recessions, the group, led by Jim Devine, has grown even stronger. They've expanded into new areas and built lasting partnerships, contributing to their success. Let’s take a look into the remarkable journey of Devine Group and how they became who they are today.
1974- Where it all started
In the challenging year of 1974, Jim Devine laid the foundation for the Devine Group. Facing economic challenges, including the Three-Day Week and a mid 70’s recession, the group emerged, with J Devine Civil Engineering Ltd being formed. The Health and Safety at Work Act and the Control of Pollution Act came into force, setting the tone for responsible business practices.
1980- Recession Continues
In January 1980, another recession had started and lasted 14 months. This was mainly due to our economy switching from manufacturing to a service economy. Inflation was at 18% in 1980, and interest rates were at 17%. For Devine Group, it meant facing more economic challenges and adapting to a different way of business.
1982 - Diversification and Growth
In February 1982, J Devine Plant Hire was established, followed by the establishment of Devine Homes PLC three years later.
1990 - Navigating Black Wednesday
In September 1990, another recession, famously known as Black Wednesday, posed challenges with high inflation and interest rates. Despite this, Devine Group continued to adapt, showcasing resilience in the face of economic uncertainties.
1992 - Prioritising Employee Safety
The year 1992 brought the Personal Protection Equipment at Work regulations into effect, highlighting the Devine Group's commitment to ensuring the safety of its workforce.
1996 - Expanding Horizons
In May 1996 Devine IAC Ltd was formed.
2008- Recession Continues
In April 2008, another recession arrived, known as The Credit Crunch, caused by a banking crisis due to the USA Subprime Mortgage Scandal.
2020- COVID-19 Hits
In 2020, the Global pandemic arrived, changing the way of life for everybody.
2024 - 50 Years Still Going Strong
As Devine Group celebrates its 50th anniversary, Nigel Jordan, Managing Director at Devine Group, reflects on the challenges faced and overcome.
He stated, "Being in the construction space certainly has its ups and downs (thankfully more ups) and I am proud that we have managed the economic roller coasters that appeared and have grown consistently throughout the last 50 years. I am sure the business will continue to expand into the next 50 years and I am super proud of the people I have worked with and met along the way."
Throughout its journey, Devine Group has formed partnerships and collaborated with various businesses, including Persimmon Homes, Vistry Group, Bellway Homes, Thakeham Homes, Taylor Wimpey, Barratt Homes, and Crest Nicholson, to name a few. The celebration of this milestone demonstrates the group's resilience, adaptability, and commitment to excellence over five decades. As they mark 50 years, Devine Group stands strong, ready for the challenges and opportunities the future holds.
