Devine Group Supervisor Mark Pilbeam Wins Silver Medal at 2025 Invictus Games

03/03/2025

Mark Pilbeam, a valued Supervisor at Devine Group, has achieved an incredible milestone at the 2025 Invictus Games, earning a silver medal in wheelchair curling. His journey to his remarkable achievement is a testament to resilience, perseverance, and the power of sport.

Before joining Devine in 2017, Mark spent 11 years with the British Army until he was medically discharged due to a spinal injury. Following his military career, he dedicated 13 years to Hampshire Fire and Rescue, where a severe arm injury led to six operations and the development of regional pain syndrome. After working for both the army and fire service, Mark was also diagnosed with PTSD.

In 2018, Mark faced another significant challenge when he was diagnosed with a form of kidney cancer that, unfortunately, means he will never be in remission. In 2022, Mark’s pain worsened, and after consulting with a military surgeon, the difficult decision was made to have his left arm amputated.

Despite these challenges, Mark found a new purpose through sport. The Invictus Games provided him with an outlet to channel his energy, adjust to life as an amputee, and manage his PTSD. He trialled various sports and made an outstanding contribution to the UK’s participation in the 2025 games in Canada. Competing in wheelchair curling, biathlon (cross-country skiing and shooting), and indoor rowing, Mark proved his resilience on an international stage.

This February, the UK team and their supporters travelled to Canada for the Games. Mark and his teammates performed exceptionally well in wheelchair curling, securing victories against Canada and Germany. In the semi-finals, they triumphed over Israel, earning a place in the final against the Republic of Korea, a Paralympic team. The UK narrowly missed out on the win, securing an impressive silver medal.

Mark also excelled in his other events. In the biathlon, he finished just 40 seconds behind third place, and in indoor rowing, he achieved a personal best.

Reflecting on his experience, Mark shared, ‘Devine has given me so much support with time off through this process, which I am very grateful for. It has been an amazing experience and has shown me how important sport is to help cope with PTSD and life in general. It has also taught me that we all face challenges, but no matter what life throws at you, no matter what is going on, you need to get up and carry on.’

Mark also encourages others who may be struggling to reach out and talk to someone, something he shares he regrettably never did.

Nigel Jordan, Managing Director of Devine Group, praised Mark’s determination, saying, ‘We are incredibly proud of everything Mark has achieved and overcome throughout his life. His perseverance is an inspiration for so many of us at Devine.’

Devine Group congratulates Mark on his incredible achievements at the Invictus Games!
